Is it possible to be patient with impatient people? Mahvelous gives her advice on how to handle road rage.

Simply Mahvelous

Dear Mahvelous,

What is it about our life today that has made common courtesy fly out the window? Last Saturday, I was trying to park at the Beverly Center. It was packed and parking spaces were few. Just as I was getting ready to pull into an open space (had my turn signal on), a hotshot guy in his Beamer swooped in right in front of me, gets out with his wife or girlfriend— and he flashes me a smug smirk like he won the lottery and I didn’t. I had this sudden urge to ram his perfectly detailed car, but overcame the urge, but just barely.

Then inside the mall, I watched a woman rudely shove past a mother with two young kids to get through the door of the department store before she could enter. She was forced to step aside to avoid getting bulldozed. I don’t understand this incredible rush to gain a few seconds while tossing all basic consideration aside. What is wrong with people these days? — Fred

Dear Fred,

Dr. Mahvelous says: Avoid going to the mall on the weekends. But seriously, this is a sign of our jaded times. Most of us were raised to respect manners and peer pressure kept that alive. But it seems the “me first” attitude is taking over at times. President Obama has stated that one of his objectives is for people to get over the “me” syndrome and become socially aware and responsible. Perhaps if we can all develop a sense of belonging to a group where individuals count, it will help shift the tide.

In the meantime, the best example is the one you set yourself. Not terribly satisfying in the short term, but it is effective. My yoga teacher reminds me about karma, and about the beneficial effects of breathing. So BREATHE, my friend, BREATHE. You will feel the anger and frustration subsiding to a manageable level, and then you can feel grateful that you’re not like them.
