At Petrossian in West Hollywood, some of the most delicious indulgences are those that can be savored, but not saved, except in your memories.
Each of us has a unique perspective on luxury. For one of my best friends, it’s all about designer handbags and baubles. A former boyfriend had a fondness for exotic sports cars. I can certainly see the lure of beautiful material possessions, yet I’m a lover of experiential luxury. For me, it’s not as much about “having” but “being.” Treasured, enriching experiences beyond the bling … the intangibles.
So what does luxury taste like? Leaving the office early on a gorgeously sunny afternoon, strolling with a dear friend under the blooming jacaranda trees on Robertson Boulevard and indulging in decadent small bites and cocktails at Petrossian Boutique and Restaurant in West Hollywood, where happy hour begins at 4 p.m.
Start with the Caviar Martini, chilled to perfection and garnished with a caviar-stuffed olive (of course!) and cocktail onion. Share some signature favorites, like the earthy Petrossian Pâté or hand-sliced ribbons of satiny, delicate smoked salmon.
Executive Chef Giselle Wellman’s happy hour menu does not disappoint. I love the Tarte Aux Pommes de Terre—a warm, savory potato tart dabbed with crème fraîche and Transmontanus caviar—and the Boulder Valley Bone Marrow accented with rosemary, thyme and sweet onion jam.
On the lighter side, there’s a pair of Jicama Smoked Trout Tacos and the summery Mini Lobster Roll. Or go for the gusto and order the Caviar Burger Slider, a juicy, fried egg-topped, messy-to-eat-but-so-worth-it tower of deliciousness dressed with Papierusse, a paper-thin sheet of caviar.
The Papierusse is tucked under the brioche bun, seasoning rather than gilding the burger.
But wait, there’s more. A side of pommes frites dipped in rich, creamy caviar aioli. Hello, decadence. Ask your server about the daily wine specials at just $6 a pop to complement your noshing, then ask yourself why you haven’t been here before.
On your way out, stop at the boutique for a little memento to enjoy at home, like a signature blue tin of legendary Petrossian caviar or irresistible chocolate truffles. If you’re like me, the chocolates won’t make it down the block. A moment of unfettered indulgence among the jacaranda trees, why not? I say, take pleasure in a melt-in-your-mouth taste of experiential luxury.
