Alfresco performances, playlists and picnics hit a high note at L.A.’s mecca for summer concerts.
It’s summer in Los Angeles and you know what that means? It’s “super bowl” season! Yes, that much-anticipated time of year when you can enjoy spectacular outdoor concerts at a storied cultural landmark—the Hollywood Bowl—while you picnic under starry skies.
This year’s super bowl season brings an incredible lineup of talent to the Hollywood Bowl. There are no Patriots or Falcons, but you can watch Fleet Foxes or Gipsy Kings play their hearts out. Instead of a quick halftime show, you’ll experience amazing performances by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Spoon and Kamasi Washington. Jonesing for an end zone strut? Join your fellow Hollywood Bowlers dancing to Pink Martini with their fusion of Brazilian samba and ’30s Cuban dance music.
And don’t forget the food. Pre-order a picnic box and pick it up at the Plaza Marketplace before the concert. The “All American” picnic box sounds like a harmonious pairing with the fireworks-filled Tchaikovsky performances on August 18 and 19: Fried chicken with buttermilk dressing, succotash salad, potato salad, cornbread with honey butter and a lovely strawberry shortcake for dessert.
Not the picnicking type? Book a table at The Wine Bar by a.o.c. or The Backyard, an alfresco eatery. The Wine Bar by a.o.c. has a delicious menu of tasty small plates, such as Albacore Crudo with avocado, cucumber, Mexican lime and Aleppo pepper. The Backyard features wood-fire grill specialties, like the intensely flavorful Kurobuta pork chops, bone-in ribeye steak and diver scallops, along with vegetables, salads and a raw bar.
I am Hollywood Bowled over by the fantastic variety of upcoming concerts this season. Here are some noteworthy upcoming performances:
August 11 & 12: Diana Krall
August 16: Jill Scott
August 17: Gershwin Under the Stars
August 23: Herbie Hancock and Kamasi Washington
August 24: Dudamel and Mozart’s Requiem
August 27: Pink Martini
September 6: Quincy Jones
September 12: Yo-Yo Ma Plays Bach
So, pack up the wine and cheese and make the most of super bowl season, where the Hollywood Hills are alive with the sound of music.
