Search engine giant decides that older women who date younger men are x-rated.
It isn’t easy being a Cougar these days. First, an article came out that women who marry younger men have a shorter life expectancy — then the producer of the hit ABC TV show Cougar Town decides he wants to change the name of the show and now Google is changing the classification of the Cougar term to “adult.” That means that Cougar dating websites where older women can meet younger men will no longer be able to advertise on the Google custom-content network.
Claudia Opdenkelder, founder of Toronto-based CougarLife.com says she was recently informed by Google that it will classify ads promoting the concept of “Cougar dating” as unsafe for family audiences even if the ads contain no sexually suggestive words or images. Opdenkelder goes on to say she doesn’t understand why ads that seem more provocative than those for Cougar Life are acceptable.
“We just want to be treated the same way as all the others,” Opdenkelder says. “The discrimination against the word ‘Cougar’ makes it even worse. It makes us Cougar women feel like dirty perverts.”
In a May 13 article posted on news website Globalnational.com, Google spokeswoman Wendy Rozeluk said, “Anything that’s considered non-family safe will not run on the Google content network at this point.”
So, exactly what is unsafe about older women dating younger men? Apparently, the Mountainview, CA-based company has bought into the myth that these relationships between older women and younger men are just about sex.
Shant Markarian, an engineer in his 30s who exclusively dates older women, believes there is still a fear factor that Cougar relationships are taboo. “It’s a shame that in this day and age we still cannot appreciate differences … be they skin color, relationships or religion,” Markarian says.
From my point of view, as an advocate of Cougar dating since 2005, I can unequivocally tell you it’s not just about sex. There are many happy Cougar couples who would be absolutely miserable dating or being married to people their own age. It will now be more difficult for older women and younger men to find each other online.
China censored Google and now Google is censoring Cougars. Today it’s Cougars, tomorrow it could be you.
